Quantitative and qualitative study of the main elements of the first grade reading textbooks according to their role in teaching: mixed method

Abstract

Considering the important role of first grade Persian books in starting to learn reading and writing skills, the purpose of this study is to investigate the main elements such as "desirability of keywords", "text readability level" and "role of images" of first grade Persian books. This study is a mixed method of Triangulation type, and a model of data transform. In the quantitative section, used the researcher-made checklist, data related to keyword quality, the level of attention to phonological awareness skills, was collected; The reading level of reading text was evaluated and analyzed by Fry method and Gunning index. In the qualitative part, with the method of organized interview, the information was collected, summarized, and finally turned into quantitative data. Then the results of the two quantitative and qualitative sections were compared, matched and interpreted. The statistical population of the research was first grade teachers in the quantitative part of first grade Persian books and in the qualitative part of potential participants. 75 teachers were selected as the participants of the research by purposive sampling method. The results showed that in the book of writing phonological exercises of the type of fragmentation and composition, more attention has been paid and in reading the book, important phonological skills have been neglected. Persian book keywords were simple and understandable for students, but a small number of these keywords were used in the textbook. The pictures in the book are mostly used by teachers with the aim of attracting attention and motivating students.
