The Effectiveness of chess training on improving visual memory and attention in boy students of fifth grade elementary school

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the effect of chess training on the enhancement of visual memory and to improve attention in boy students of fifth grade elementary school. An experimental design was employed with pretest, posttest and control group. The statistical population of this study included all fifth grade elementary school son students in Qaen studying in the academic year 2017-2018. The sampling method in this study was multi - stage cluster sampling that, in the end, 40 students were selected and were randomly divided into test and control groups. The data collection tools were Andre Ray's visual memory test and Toulouse-Piéron comet squares test. Then, the chess training was conducted in the experimental group for twelve sessions which each session was 90 minutes. Finally, the same tests were completed by both experimental and control groups. In order to analyze the data, the covariance analysis method was used. The results showed that chess training has a positive effect on visual memory and improving the attention of students. The results of this study encourage us to use this game more to improve memory or treat concentration problems.
