Background and Objectives: Children with physical-motor disabilities face cognitive, emotional, and social challenges. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of theory of mind training on emotion regulation and lability/negativity in children with physical-motor disabilities.
Method: This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of elementary school students with physical-motor disabilities in Hamadan during the 2025–2026 academic year. A total of 30 students were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=15) and a control group (n=15). The instruments included the Emotion Regulation Scale (Shields & Cicchetti, 1997) and the Theory of Mind Training Protocol (Hadwin et al., 1996; Happé, 1992). The experimental group received Theory of Mind training in 11 sessions, after which the posttest was administered to both groups.
Findings: The results of the multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the study variables after controlling for pretest scores (p<0.01, partial η²=0.616). Furthermore, the univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that Theory of Mind training had a significant effect on emotion regulation (p=0.001, partial η²=0.372) and lability/negativity (p=0.004, partial η²=0.278).
Conclusion: Theory of Mind training, by enhancing children's understanding of their own and others' mental states, improved emotion regulation and reduced emotional lability/negativity in children with physical-motor disabilities. Based on the findings, Theory of Mind training may be used as an effective intervention to promote cognitive-emotional abilities in these children.
